Taking the Plunge

I have a slightly serious love for all things design. Especially prints and paper goods. (Take a look at my Pinterest page for some of my favorites.) My dream job is to create beautiful designs like the above. Gorgeous. So what's the problem? The problem was that I'm majoring in Agribusiness. But, something big has happened that inspired me to strive for a career I truly love. A couple of weeks ago we got a gut-wrenching phone call. Nathan along with nearly 100 other employees had been laid off from his job.

It's important to mention here that we dealt with this in completely different ways. He took it hard at first, and once he had time to process things he bounced right back. But with me, the longer it set in the worse I felt. When we finally sat down to figure out our plans, it was honestly the first time we had ever discussed what we wanted out of our careers. Where did we see ourselves in five, ten, even twenty years? What were our dream jobs? Two weeks and one very long conversation later Nathan has a new refined sense of direction, and I changed my major to Graphic Design.

If you get nothing else out of this post, understand this: If Nate had never been let go and we had never had to experience that terrifying "What do we do now?" feeling, I would be going to school to prepare for years in a career I didn't really enjoy, and Nate would be stuck in a 9-5 office building rutt. Do what you really want to do. And don't take as long as I did to figure out that it is the right decision.

  1. As cliche as it is, everything happens for a reason. Losing a job isn't fun, but sometimes it takes something big like that to push you in the right direction. Good luck with everything!
